Arsenal loanee wins penalty on home debut

Arsenal loanee Charles Sagoe Jr. continued his strong start on loan with Kalmar FF by winning a penalty on Saturday, but he now faces a break from football over the next few weeks.

Arsenal’s Charles Sagoe Jr. left north London in February, joining Swedish club Kalmar FF on a one-year loan lasting until January 2027.

The winger explained that he felt he “needed a fresh start, and an opportunity to show what I can do”, adding that “it felt like the right place for me to develop into first-team football”.

The 21-year-old certainly got off on the right foot, scoring one goal and assisting another in a 2-1 win on his debut away to Varnamo. He then carried that good form into his second appearance, winning a penalty on his home debut against Orgryte.

The penalty was a desperately-needed way back into the game at the time, with Kalmar 2-0 down. Sagoe Jr. snuck in ahead of the defender and got a touch on the ball in the 67th minute, before receiving a kick on his outstretched leg and going down.

Unfortunately, Kalmar’s Marius Soderback missed the spot-kick, but the team did still manage to rally and secure a 2-2 draw by full-time.

With a goal, an assist, and a penalty award, Sagoe Jr. couldn’t have hoped for much more from his first two appearances on loan. The only problem now is he faces almost a month until his next competitive action.

Saturday’s game was the final match of the Swedish Cup group stage, and a draw was only enough to secure Kalmar second in the group table.

Even a win wouldn’t have seen them overtake Mjallby AIF, who defeated Kalmar in their opening game (prior to Sagoe Jr.’s debut) on their way to three wins from three.

As a result, Kalmar’s Swedish Cup campaign is over, with only the top team progressing to the next round.

Svenska Cupen Kalmar

With no cup games to come, Kalmar’s next competitive fixture will be in the Allsvenskan, the Swedish top-tier. Sagoe Jr.’s loan team kick off their season against Vasteras on April 5th.

The good news is that the Arsenal loanee has made a pretty good case for himself with regards to Kalmar’s team selection in the league.
