David Ornstein reports for The Athletic that Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet is set to undergo a medical with Liverpool ahead of a proposed summer transfer.

The 20-year-old will hold his medical on Monday and sign a five-year contract with an option to extend by 12 months, but he won’t actually complete the move until this summer – spending the final months of this season with Rennes.

When the deal eventually goes through, Liverpool will pay £55m plus another £5m in add-ons. Ornstein reports that personal terms are not set to be an issue.

Chelsea had also been pushing to sign Jacquet this month, following links between the player and Arsenal last summer.

Ornstein reports that Jacquet had been of long-term interest to Arsenal, and that he was discussed as a potential signing before the Gunners moved for Cristhian Mosquera.

There hadn’t been any talk of a revived Arsenal bid this month, so it seems the Gunners weren’t seriously in the race for Jacquet this time around. All the same, Liverpool will be pleased they’ve all but completed the signing of a player who featured highly on many of their rivals’ shortlists.

Jacquet has made 19 appearances for Rennes this season in a very promising start to his young career, though it’s fair to say the last couple of months have been more difficult for him.

After picking up a red card in a 5-0 defeat to PSG at the start of December, Jacquet then picked up a yellow-card suspension in his first game back against Lille.

Returning to the team again on January 24th, the centre-back has been involved in back-to-back defeats to FC Lorient (2-0) and AS Monaco (4-0). He’ll hope to turn things around with his current club after he finalises his future move to Liverpool later today.
