Arsenal transfer fee was 84% less than initial reports claimed

Arsenal’s deal to sign Jaden Dixon from Stoke City is set to cost much less than expected, though there’s still no official confirmation that the transfer is done.

On transfer deadline day, Fabrizio Romano broke the news that Arsenal had agreed a deal to sign Jaden Dixon from Stoke City. At the time, Romano reported the fee as £3.2m plus add-ons, quite a significant investment for an 18-year-old defender.

Yet subsequent and widespread reports have claimed a significantly different figure for the transfer.

Tom Canton of the Mirror, Alex Howell of the BBC, Sam Dean of The Telegraph, and James McNicholas of The Athletic have all since reported that Arsenal will only pay an initial fee of £500k.

Even Isaan Khan of the Daily Mail, who initially reported the same £3.2m fee as Romano, later corrected himself to confirm the fee is actually £500k (as shown above).

Though the total may still increase with add-ons, the initial figure is less than 16% of the £3.2m fee first reported.

It’s worth mentioning that this is all assuming that the deal actually went through on deadline day. At the time of writing, Arsenal are still yet to confirm anything.

Dixon himself must have been pretty sure the move was going through on Monday night, as he posted a farewell to Stoke on Instagram.

“My time at Stoke has come to an end,” Dixon wrote. “I want to say a huge thank you to all the coaches that have supported me over the years. Thank you Stoke City for a time I’ll never forget.”

Assuming everything was finalised in time before the deadline, we should get that official confirmation before long.
