Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano reported on Thursday that Arsenal will be going for a midfielder this summer, but the Gunners will also be prioritising the signing of a younger right-back.

“One thing I can guarantee is that Arsenal will work on, eventually, midfielders in the summer,” Romano said.

“But I can tell you that one of the priorities in the summer transfer window, for Arsenal, I think a bit underrated in this moment in terms of [the] media, could be also to add a younger right-back to the squad.

“Arsenal are also considering the possibility to do something not just in midfield, but could be also at right-back position, and also on the winger position.

“Arsenal are going to be active in the summer transfer window…the work behind the scenes is starting.”

The pursuit of a right-back is perhaps telling about Ben White’s future, with the defender struggling for consistent minutes this season. The 28-year-old will have two years left on his contract this summer, so if things don’t change he may look to move on.

Arsenal already have Jurrien Timber as their starting right-back in that scenario, and Cristhian Mosquera can also provide cover, as he did at the weekend against Spurs.

But if White leaves, Arsenal would want someone who can share minutes with Timber on a regular basis, and Mosquera might not fit the bill given he would already be providing cover at centre-back.

In that scenario, the signing of a younger right-back who might not expect to be an instant starter would make sense.

As for the interest in a winger, there have been rumours linking Arsenal with Anthony Gordon this week, and he’s likely one of a shortlist of players the club are considering.

Romano claims we’ll get a better idea of the specific players Arsenal are targeting as we get closer to the summer window, with the club currently focusing on trying to win trophies.
