Xabi Alonso believes Real Madrid’s chances of success this season were significantly damaged by the club failing to pursue Arsenal’s Martin Zubimendi.

ESPN Deportes reports that Xabi Alonso was unhappy with Real Madrid last summer after they failed to sign a midfielder who could dictate the tempo for his team.
Alonso wanted to bring in Martin Zubimendi, who had a close relationship with the then-Real Madrid head coach. But the club didn’t believe it was a necessary signing, and they brought in other players instead.
ESPN sources claim Alonso felt the decision significantly diminished Real Madrid’s chances of success this season.

The report follows similar claims from Tomas Roncero of Spanish outlet AS, who reported on Tuesday morning that Zubimendi was Alonso’s top target for the Real Madrid midfield.
AS claim Real Madrid simply hesitated and missed the opportunity, rather than turning down the chance completely. But the report adds that the club were never convinced.
Once again, AS report that Alonso has privately complained about his midfield options, believing none of them are capable of anchoring the team in the middle.

The good news is that with Alonso parting ways with Real Madrid, there will be no second chance for the manager to go in for Zubimendi and tempt him back to Spain.
Zubimendi has a contract with the Gunners lasting until 2030, and Arsenal fans have been pleased with his performances so far. The fanbase should be grateful to the Real Madrid hierarchy for giving their team a free run at the signing.
