Manchester United have reached an agreement with Michael Carrick to become their interim manager until the end of the season, and Steve Holland is set to be his assistant.

David Ornstein reports for The Athletic that Manchester United have reached an agreement in principle to appoint Michael Carrick as their new interim head coach until the end of the 2025/26 campaign.
The deal is now just subject to finalising contract details, and an announcement is expected soon. Barring any late hiccups, Carrick is expected to be in place for United’s game against Manchester City this weekend, whilst current interim boss Darren Fletcher will return to the u18s.
Sami Mokbel adds for the BBC that former England assistant manager Steve Holland will be Carrick’s number two, with Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Travis Binnion also part of the interim manager’s team. Mokbel reports that an announcement is set for Tuesday.

Manchester United are set to play against Arsenal on January 25th, so one of Carrick’s first games back with the club will be at the Emirates Stadium.
There’s also an interesting subplot with Steve Holland, who was widely reported to have fallen out with Ben White during their time with England, ultimately leading to White’s refusal to play for the team.
You’d hope there wouldn’t be too many reasons for things to kick off between Arsenal’s backup right-back and United’s assistant interim head coach next Sunday, but you never know.

Carrick will have Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo back available for selection against both City and Arsenal after the two were eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations with the Ivory Coast and Cameroon respectively.
Noussair Mazraoui remains at the tournament with hosts Morocco, and he’ll definitely miss the Manchester derby. But he should be back with his club team in time for the Arsenal match the following week.
