Arsenal’s stance on Semenyo ahead of January transfer window

Antoine Semenyo could be on the move in the January transfer window, but it’s unlikely Arsenal will be the club to trigger his release clause.

Sky Sports News report that whilst Arsenal have kept an eye on Antoine Semenyo’s development, but as it stands, the club feel they’re well stocked in forward areas.

The Gunners are therefore unlikely to make a move for Semenyo in the January transfer window, which could mean missing out on him to a big-six rival.

Sky report that Tottenham Hotspur are intensifying their interest ahead of the January window, with Liverpool and Manchester City also keen. As a reminder, Semenyo’s new deal contains a release clause of £60m plus £5m in bonuses.

Paul Hirst and Paul Joyce had reported for The Times last month that City were considering triggering Semenyo’s release clause in January, but Liverpool had not originally planned to be involved in the winter window, perhaps making their pursuit a lot less likely to bear fruit.

Yet The Times’ report added that City hadn’t fully committed to a move for Semenyo, so Spurs could yet snatch the deal away for themselves.

Semenyo previously held talks with Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United over the summer, but he turned them both down at the time.

Arsenal have never really been favourites for Semenyo, but the fans have continued to believe a move is possible because the winger is a self-proclaimed supporter of the club.

“I am an Arsenal fan,” Semenyo told The Athletic amid links to the Gunners last year. “I don’t conflict the two with my job.

“It is great to play against Arsenal, a team I have watched all my life and I want to play for the top clubs as well. In order for that to happen I need to prove it.”

The 25-year-old made an excellent start to the season, scoring six goals and assisting three in his first eight appearances. But it’s worth mentioning he’s scored and assisted none in his last nine games for club and country, so his form has certainly dipped.
