Injured Arsenal loanee in contention for Premier League comeback on Sunday

Arsenal loanee Reiss Nelson has been struggling with a knock over the last week or so, but he’s in contention to return to action against Leeds United on Sunday.

Arsenal loanee Reiss Nelson has struggled for minutes with Brentford so far this season, with a poorly-timed and pretty serious illness disrupting his early momentum by sidelining him for around three weeks.

Nelson impressed in his first start at the end of October, scoring one goal and assisting another in a League Cup game against Grimsby Town, and he then started to get opportunities from the bench in the Premier League.

But those chances dried up at the start of December, with Nelson ineligible to face parent club Arsenal, and then conspicuously absent for Brentford’s following game against Spurs.

Brentford boss Keith Andrews has explained that Nelson suffered a minor setback with a knock last week, around the time of the Arsenal game. But the good news he’s now closing in on a comeback, with Brentford hosting Leeds United on Sunday.

“Reiss is doing pretty well,” Andrews said. “He took a knock a week or so ago, so we’ll see how he shapes up for Sunday.

“He should be in and around being available for Sunday. We’ll see how he goes over the next few days.

“There are going to be opportunities for lots of players over the coming weeks with the nature of the games that we have and the schedule over Christmas being a busy one.”

With Nelson only spending 121 minutes on the pitch for Brentford so far in all competitions, he’ll certainly hope that there will be more opportunities for him to play in the second half of the season.
