Arsenal won 2-0 on Wednesday night to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table, but for long periods of the game the result was still in the balance.

The Gunners took an early lead through Mikel Merino, and they didn’t add to it and kill off the contest until the 91st minute.

Long before that, Brentford only narrowly failed to score an equaliser when a powerful header by Kevin Schade was acrobatically saved onto the crossbar by David Raya.

Reflecting on the chance in his live commentary for Sky Sports, former Gunner Alan Smith suggested it was one of the best saves of the campaign so far.

“His reflexes are second to none,” Smith said. “And the power from fairly close in… six yards out? The slow motion doesn’t do it justice really because that was fired in, and it was going to come just underneath the crossbar. It’s one of the saves of the season.”

Legendary Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman agreed, writing on social media: “Whaaaat a save from David Raya”

Mikel Arteta also weighed in, saying: “I thought it was in, because they are so good at that as well. It’s a big moment in the game.”

Raya ended up keeping a clean sheet, his 12th of the season in all competitions and his eighth in the Premier League alone.

The Spaniard is one clear of Crystal Palace’s Dean Henderson in the Golden Glove race as it stands, with Chelsea’s Robert Sanchez (six) the only other goalkeeper on more than five.

If Raya keeps making saves like Wednesday’s, another Golden Glove award next May seems inevitable.
