Piero Hincapie was one of a number of signings for Arsenal over the summer, but he’s perhaps had the smallest role of the group so far.

None of the other seven summer signings have played fewer minutes than Hincapie, even including Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has only featured in the League Cup.

Yet the picture has started to change over the last week, with Hincapie shaking off his previous injury problems to start against Brighton and Slavia Prague. Arsenal fans have been eager to show their support for the loanee, coming up with a new chant ahead of Tuesday’s match.

In a video shared on social media, Arsenal fans could be heard chanting: “Piero Hincapie, the Arsenal get excited when they see you play, it’s strange that this feeling grows more and more, ’cause we’ve never had a player from Ecuador.”

Hincapie went on to play 73 minutes of the Slavia Prague game as a left-back, though he’s also capable of playing at centre-back. Mikel Arteta discussed the 23-year-old’s performance and role after the match.

“I was very happy, he can play in those two positions, as a centre-back or full-back,” Arteta said. “Today, the way we had to set up and the situation that we have to imagine with the ball, I wanted to have him low on that side.

“I think he was really good, really strong, really efficient and [it’s] really good, because now he’s got some minutes in the last week with two games and the last minutes against Burnley. So, we’re getting him up to speed. “

Hincapie may have had a minor role in Arsenal’s season so far, but now that he’s fit he’ll be looking to change that. Arteta and the fans are clearly hoping he’ll be a big success in north London.
