Arsenal make offer for 24yo Real Madrid forward – report

Arsenal have made a formal offer to Real Madrid for forward Rodrygo, according to reports in Spain that suggest Xabi Alonso is prepared to let the Brazilian leave the Bernabéu in January.

Arsenal’s depth has underpinned their strong start this season, especially as injuries continue to take their toll, with Arteta’s side four points clear of Manchester City and well ahead of defending champions Liverpool.

Now, after a summer in which more than £250 million was spent on eight new arrivals, the club apparently want more.

Spanish outlets, via a number of UK ones, report that Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City have submitted bids worth €60 million, plus €20 million in achievable add-ons, for Rodrygo. According to the same reports, the overtures have led Alonso to advise Florentino Pérez that Madrid should consider a sale.

Quoting internal views at Madrid, one report states that Rodrygo’s most recent performances have failed to justify the role he expects within the squad. It adds: ‘Within the coaching staff, there’s a conviction that the project doesn’t depend on Rodrygo. The Brazilian maintains enormous ambition, but the level of influence he’s shown doesn’t match the role he’s demanding.’

The same report continues: ‘His most recent performances have raised doubts, and the feeling is that he hasn’t quite established himself as a decisive player in Real Madrid’s crucial matches. Furthermore, his frustration with the lack of playing time in key matches has created unnecessary tension within the dressing room.’

Madrid are described as viewing the €80 million package on offer as a potential opportunity to reset a squad still in transition under Alonso. One line notes: ‘The offer is substantial and opens the door to reinvestment in priority positions.’

Arsenal have, of course, made no comment on the situation, but the rumour is familiar. The summer saw a lot of talk just like this only for Real Madrid to opt to keep Rodrygo when the window closed.

He has started just two league games all season and only one in the Champions League.
