Jack Porter has been named in the England u17 squad for the World Cup in November, but Max Dowman won’t be involved despite his vital role in qualifying.

England u17 boss Neil Ryan has named his squad for the upcoming u17 World Cup, with Arsenal goalkeeper Jack Porter making the list.
Porter will be Arsenal’s only youngster at the tournament, with Max Dowman not included. The FA decided to promote Dowman to the England u19s following his Premier League debut for Arsenal, and it seems he’s set to stay at that level.
Porter was also promoted to the England u19s at the same time in September, and he then played for the England u18s in October. But for a major tournament like the World Cup, it’s not uncommon for players who have played at higher levels to drop back down.

U17 boss Ryan likely would have hoped to have Dowman available as well, given the midfielder’s key role in qualifying. The Arsenal 15-year-old scored three goals and assisted two in six Euros qualifiers (which doubled as World Cup qualifiers).
But Dowman is now a regular in Arsenal’s first-team squad, and there’s certainly an argument that he’s beyond u17 football at this stage. It wouldn’t particularly benefit his development anymore.
The situation is different with Porter, who is still fighting for a regular spot in Arsenal’s youth teams. He should certainly get a lot from playing in the u17 World Cup in November.

England are in Group E for the tournament, playing Venezuela on November 4th, Haiti on November 7th, and Egypt on November 10th. Should the team continue to progress all the way to the final, Porter could be in Qatar until November 27th, so he’ll be spending up to a month away from Arsenal.
