1 back, 3 out: Newcastle injuries for Arsenal clash

Jacob Murphy will be available to face Arsenal with Newcastle United on Sunday, but Eddie Howe’s side will be without a few other players due to injury.

Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy was unavailable for their League Cup win over Bradford City earlier this week, but Eddie Howe has confirmed that he’s fit and available for Arsenal at the weekend, they’re just managing him carefully.

“He’s doing okay,” Howe said. “It’s an issue that we’re managing. Sometimes, with Achilles tendon problems, they’re sort of ongoing and players manage them. We’ve had several in the past few seasons who have done that.

“He’s sort of in that place where he is fit and available, and has been, but maybe certain days he’s been quite sore, so we’ve just tried to manage his load.”

Jacob Ramsey and Yoane Wissa are both likely out until after the October international break, with Ramsey working to make a comeback from a foot issue and summer signing Wissa recovering from a knee injury.

Fabian Schar could be back before the break, but it seems like this particular fixture has come too soon.

In better news for Newcastle, Anthony Gordon made his comeback from suspension against Bradford City earlier this week, having spent three league games out of action – though he did play and score against Barcelona in the Champions League in the middle of that domestic ban.

Gordon’s red card against Liverpool means he’s only played 135 minutes of Premier League football this season, and he’ll be looking to build on that on Sunday.

With Arsenal also missing at least three players through injury, neither team can have many excuses on the fitness front. Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, and Noni Madueke will all certainly be out, with Piero Hincapie a strong doubt but Martin Odegaard in line to return.
