Self-proclaimed Liverpool fan to referee Arsenal match again

Jarred Gillett is set to referee Arsenal’s trip to Newcastle United this weekend, as the Premier League continue to use the Liverpool-supporting official for their rivals’ matches.

For the second time already in the early weeks of the 2025/26 season, Jarred Gillett has been appointed as the referee for an Arsenal match.

The Premier League have confirmed their match officials for the coming round of fixtures, including Arsenal’s trip away to Newcastle United.

Gillett will referee, assisted by Ian Hussin and Scott Ledger. Anthony Taylor will be the fourth official, with Darren England on VAR and Steve Meredith as the assistant VAR.

Gillett had also refereed Arsenal’s match against Leeds United last month, as fans continue to question why the Australian Liverpool fan is being handed so many games involving Liverpool’s nearest Premier League title rival.

Fox Sports commentator Brenton Speed revealed that Gillett had told him about the fact he supported Liverpool before he was appointed as a Premier League referee, saying: “He told me about this a couple of months ago, said keep it under your hat because I’m not sure whether I’ll get the appointment.

“He had to fill out a document when he agreed to join the referees’ board over there and you have to fill in the team you supported as a boy/man and he said it was Liverpool.

“So that means you’re taken off all their games, home or away.”

As Speed alludes to, Gillett has never been put on a Liverpool game, for good reason. Though quite why he keeps refereeing Liverpool’s rivals is unclear.

There are plenty of games every weekend involving teams with no relevance to Liverpool, yet this is the second time in six games Gillett has refereed Arsenal, having also refereed the home game against Leeds United.

Of Arsenal’s other four games, Gillett was on VAR for two of them, and he was obviously ineligible for the Liverpool match. So that only leaves one time he hasn’t been selected to officiate the Gunners.

The one positive thing you can say is that there’s perhaps never been more acrimony between Liverpool and Newcastle United than at this very moment.

Alexander Isak’s transfer between the two clubs provoked plenty of resentment this summer, so Gillett’s support for Liverpool may not give him an obvious favourite in the Newcastle-Arsenal clash this weekend.
