2nd Arsenal midfielder joins Hamburg

Fabio Vieira has joined Hamburg on a season-long loan from Arsenal, with the Bundesliga club holding an option to make the deal permanent for more than €20 million (£17.3 million).

Arsenal had been open to a permanent sale or a loan with an obligation to buy, but ultimately accepted Hamburg’s terms, mindful that a strong season could raise Vieira’s value or pave the way for a permanent move next summer.

Vieira struggled to establish himself in north London after arriving from Porto in 2022, and spent last season back in Portugal on loan. Stuttgart were among those interested in a permanent deal but refused to meet Arsenal’s €30 million valuation, while West Ham made a late approach that the player rejected in favour of Germany.

Hamburg, newly promoted to the Bundesliga, targeted Vieira to address a lack of technical quality in midfield. Head coach Merlin Polzin is expected to build his side’s creativity around the Portuguese playmaker, who will be reunited with Albert Sambi Lokonga, also signed from Arsenal on deadline day.

For Hamburg, landing two midfielders from Arsenal represents a statement of intent in their first season back in the top flight.
