Mikel Arteta has urged Bukayo Saka to follow the example of William Saliba and commit his long-term future, as Arsenal look to secure two of their most important players for the years ahead.
According to David Ornstein, Saliba has agreed a new contract running until 2030, a deal that shuts down interest from Real Madrid and guarantees the 24-year-old remains central to Arteta’s project.
Asked about the news, Arteta said: “So yeah, hopefully it will be everybody in the world, Arsenal included, [reporting it] very soon and that’s what I’m hoping but let’s leave the club to announce that when it’s all done.”
Arteta was clear about Saliba’s importance, saying: “He certainly is and he’s been instrumental in everything we’ve done in the last few years. It’s great to see a lot of players willing and so driven to come into the club. That means that they are happy, they feel valued and they see that this is the best opportunity for them to continue their careers and fulfil the ambition of the club.”
The manager added that Saliba’s progress is a source of pride. “Well, it’s very impressive what he’s done at his age because sometimes we tend to forget. But his consistency, I think, the way he’s progressed, I think the way he’s matured as well as a person and his role in the team has grown year after year.
“I think he’s built a partnership with Gabi especially but with the back line and the keeper that has given the best defensive record in the last three years I think, and he’s been pivotal to that.”
Turning to Saka, whose current deal expires in 2027, Arteta made his position clear: “I would love that. From everything that I know, he is a player that is extremely happy, and proud to have the role that he has at the football club.
“Things will develop in a natural way, like they always do, and everyone knows how important Bukayo is for us. Hopefully, we can do it.”
Arsenal’s ability to tie down Saliba, alongside Gabriel earlier this summer, is a significant statement of intent. But for Arteta, persuading Saka to follow suit would be just as symbolic, securing the future of two players who have come to define his side.
