Arsenal Lokonga fee much lower than reported

Albert Sambi Lokonga’s move to Hamburg may have cost far less than first reported, with German media claiming Arsenal received only a minimal fee.

Wild transfer final at HSV, who suddenly went on a big shopping spree at England's vice-champions Arsenal London.

At first, the deal with Albert Sambi Lokonga (25) was clear. The HSV will only pay 300,000 euros in compensation plus a possible bonus for the Belgian, the contract runs until 2028. With a market value of 8 million euros, a good deal! Sporting director Claus Costa (41) is pleased about his new addition to the defensive midfield. "Sambi is a technically strong player who has an excellent passing game, especially in depth.“

Lokonga receives the back number 6: "I really want to help the team with my qualities. Whether through goals, assists or defensive work."Sports Board Member Stefan Kuntz (62) hopes to increase the playing quality in the midfield with the Belgian international (two appearances): "He should help our team in the build-up of the game.“

There was a huge hitch at the start of the Bundesliga (0:0 in Gladbach, 0:2 against Pauli).

And for creativity, the HSV also gets a real firecracker from Arsenal!

Fabio Vieira (25) should revive the maue offensive game of the HSV. The former Portugal U21 international (25 appearances / 14 goals) was paid a proud 35 million euros by the London 2022 to FC Porto.

The attacking midfielder is on loan for one season – with a purchase option of around 20 million euros (the market value is 22 million)! The idea behind this is probably also to be able to resell it for a much higher sum next summer if in doubt.

HSV BOSS Kuntz: "Fabio is a classic playmaker who brings a lot of creativity."Sporting Director Costa adds: "He can set decisive impulses in the last third with the last or penultimate ball.“

Despite his 15 goals in 118 games for regular club Porto and three goals (49 appearances) in the Arsenal shirt, Vieira is more impressive with his assists. At Porto, he set up 24 goals for his colleagues. There were ten in the Premier League after all.

Vieira had agreed to a loan back to home club FC Porto for only eleven appearances (one goal) in the 2023/24 Premier League season. There he made 26 league appearances last season, scoring four goals and preparing four. He no longer plays a role at Arsenal.

Vieira gets the back number 20, is looking forward to the HSV: "The fans, the stadium, basically the conditions here at the club are incredible.“

Early coverage of the deal indicated Arsenal had secured around £2.5 million for the Belgian midfielder, who had entered the final year of his contract.

But according to Hamburg-based reports, the Bundesliga side will pay only €300,000 in compensation, with potential bonuses attached, and have tied the 25-year-old to a contract running until 2028.

With Lokonga’s market value still listed at €8 million, Hamburg are understood to view the transfer as a coup.

Sporting director Claus Costa welcomed the arrival, saying: “Sambi is a technically strong player who has an excellent passing game, especially in depth.”

Lokonga will wear the number six shirt and declared: “I really want to help the team with my qualities. Whether through goals, assists or defensive work.”

Board member Stefan Kuntz added: “He should help our team in the build-up of the game,” with Hamburg desperate to improve after a poor start to the campaign which has seen them lose one and draw one without scoring a goal.

Lokonga’s exit closes a chapter at Arsenal that never truly ignited following his £17.2 million move from Anderlecht in 2021.

Loan spells at Crystal Palace, Luton Town and Sevilla failed to establish him as a long-term option in Mikel Arteta’s squad. His move to Hamburg now offers the chance of a career reset in Germany, albeit at a fee that underlines how far his stock has fallen since leaving Belgium.

The news also came as Hamburg finalised a loan for Fábio Vieira, who joined from Arsenal with an option to buy for €20 million which Hamburg will never take up.
