Leah Williamson is still a doubt for England’s Euro 2025 semi-final against Italy after sustaining an ankle injury during extra time in their quarter-final win over Sweden but she’s back in training.
The Arsenal defender briefly attempted to continue but was forced to leave the field, making way for Niamh Charles.

Sarina Wiegman, England’s manager, confirmed after the game: “She rolled her ankle. I don’t know what it is right now. She couldn’t stay on so we had to take her off.”
However, the night before the semi-final against Italy, things seem much more positive for the Arsenal defender.
Williamson trained with the squad on Monday with Wiegman telling reporters, “We are very optimistic that Leah will be available. I want what’s best for the team and that’s absolutely having our captain on the pitch for us.
”She really wants to play, she did everything to recover as good as possible, and she has. She trained today, If she recovers well she can play tomorrow.”
Although she still must pass a late fitness test before the game, optimism within the squad is high about her availability.

In summary, as of July 22, 2025, Leah Williamson is training again and expected to be fit to lead England’s defence in the crucial Euro 2025 semi-final against Italy, pending a final fitness test.
During the injury stoppage, Chloe Kelly spoke with Williamson, ensuring that Charles had time to warm up for her substitution. “I could see she [Williamson] was in a little bit of pain, she’s an unbelievable captain and a good friend of mine so I was just saying wait a little longer because we need someone to warm up,” said Kelly.
The match was also notable for the crucial impact of Arsenal’s Michelle Agyemang, whose equaliser with nine minutes remaining sent the game to extra-time.
Kelly praised Agyemang’s energy, saying: “Just speaking to her throughout the game, I was like, ‘Come alive now Mich, come alive now’, and for the next five minutes I felt like she had real energy. She’s a bright young girl, she brings such strength to our squad – her power, her speed.”
