Arsenal agree to release player early

Jorginho and Arsenal have reached an agreement to terminate his contract early so he can join Flamengo ahead of the Club World Cup, according to a report from Brazil.

Brazilian journalists Mauro Sant’Anna and Bruno Lemos report that Jorginho is set to become a Flamengo player, reaching an agreement with Arsenal that he’ll terminate his contract early before its June 30th expiry.

As a result, Flamengo will be able to sign Jorginho as soon as the transfer window opens, making him available for the Club World Cup in June.

That was always one of the potential pitfalls of Flamengo’s attempts to sign Jorginho on a free transfer. The player is out of contract this summer, so he can sign for any club without Arsenal’s permission from July 1st. But the Club World Cup kicks off for Flamengo on June 17th.

There’s an additional transfer window specifically to help teams involved in the Club World Cup, with the window opening on June 1st until June 10th. But if Jorginho wants to make a transfer then, he needs Arsenal to release him early.

According to the Brazilian journalists, that’s what the Gunners have agreed to do and it isn’t too surprising, as there is a lot of goodwill between player and club.

Denying Jorginho the chance to play at the Club World Cup would be a petty move, and letting him go early would also likely mean saving a few weeks of wages.

All the same, we’ll have to wait for official confirmation to know for sure what will happen, or at least for the major outlets to pick the story up.
