Spanish report doubts Ancelotti can fix Real Madrid before Arsenal

Spanish media raise doubts about Real Madrid’s tactical foundations ahead of their Champions League rematch with Arsenal at the Bernabéu.

Unfinished task More than on the emotional side, what Ancelotti must focus on to achieve the comeback is the tactical side. The team has weaknesses both in defense and in attack, and Arsenal will not forgive that. Carlo Ancelotti knows that he is playing for his future in this tie against Arsenal. To come back from a 3–0 deficit in the Champions League against a team like Arsenal, Real Madrid knows it will need the tactical side more than the emotional. And for that, the team must perform on the pitch but, judging by recent showings, that is far from being achieved. In defense, a sieve To begin with, the defense of Real Madrid, led by Courtois due to the permanent injuries of Carvajal and Militão, has been Ancelotti’s biggest headache. The area of the pitch where he has had to make the most experiments out of necessity, and where it seems he has concluded that the best option is to pair Rüdiger and Asencio at center-back with two physical full-backs like Valverde and Fran García. Even so, these same players suffered — and how — at the Emirates, making it hard to believe that, in just one week, the Italian coach can fix all the outstanding issues: coverage, ball distribution, aerial play, and set-piece positioning. All of this has led to a devastating statistic: nine goals conceded in the last three matches. The second task, and no less important, lies in the midfield. The engine room of the team, where after the injury to Ceballos, there has been a worrying lack of ideas that has only been solved by the attackers’ finishing ability. And as if the team were a technological device, the final problem — and possibly the most important — is the lack of connection between the attacking players. Vinícius, who used to carry the team on his back, has been eclipsed by Mbappé but also by himself, far from his best version. Same situation for Rodrygo, who has become undroppable and has stopped contributing to the team. As things stand, Ancelotti must work against the clock to fix everything.

Carlo Ancelotti is running out of time. With Real Madrid trailing 3–0 heading into the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Arsenal, criticism in the Spanish press has moved beyond the question of motivation. Now, it’s about tactics.

And, according to Mundo Deportivo, the Italian has not shown any signs of resolving key structural issues facing his team, which is good news for the Gunners!

In a piece published on Saturday under the headline Tarea pendiente (“Unfinished business”), Mario Calderón lays out the concerns in direct terms. “More than in the emotional, what Ancelotti must focus on to achieve the comeback is the tactical side,” he writes. “The team has weaknesses in both defence and attack, and that is something Arsenal will not forgive.”

The criticism begins at the back.

Thibaut Courtois remains solid in goal, but the instability in front of him has undermined their defence. The prolonged absences of Dani Carvajal and Éder Militão have forced repeated changes in shape, and the back four of Rüdiger, Asencio, Valverde, and Fran García struggled badly at the Emirates.

The article highlights “covering, ball progression, aerial duels, and set-piece positioning” as areas that have still not been sorted out. Calderón points to a damning stat: “nine goals conceded in the last three matches.”

Midfield, usually the foundation of a Real Madrid side, has also performed poorly. He writes that the injury to Dani Ceballos has deprived the team of structure, and with Luka Modrić stretched and Aurélien Tchouaméni only just returning, the lack of rhythm and control has become glaring. “The engine room of the team has shown a worrying lack of ideas,” the piece notes, “only resolved by moments of quality from the forwards.”

Yet even in attack, Real Madrid’s edge has dulled. Vinícius Júnior, once the side’s most reliable attacker, “has been eclipsed by Mbappé but also by himself, far from his best version.” Rodrygo, whose automatic place in the starting 11 is now rarely questioned, “has stopped contributing.”

“The last of the problems, and possibly the most important,” writes Calderón, “is the lack of connection between the attacking players.” This issue also prompted another piece in the French press asking if Kylian Mbappe‘s arrival ‘destabilised’ Madrid rather than improving them.

“He unbalanced the whole Real Madrid team”: Hanouna tears into the “indefensible black cat” Mbappé, who “brings bad luck” Kylian Mbappé on Tuesday night during Real Madrid's debacle against Arsenal. LE SCAN SPORT – On Europe 1 radio, the famous television presenter gave his analysis of Real Madrid’s season and did not spare Kylian Mbappé. Kylian Mbappé’s season at Real Madrid has (for now) not convinced Cyril Hanouna at all. Humiliated in London Tuesday night in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final, on Arsenal’s pitch (3–0), the Madrid side find themselves with their backs against the wall before the return leg next Wednesday at the Bernabéu and continue to show alarming form in recent weeks. Speaking on Europe 1, Hanouna, who is close to PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, spoke about the struggling season of Los Blancos. And, according to the former host of Touche Pas à Mon Poste, the cause of the current difficulties at the White House comes down to one player in particular... a certain Kylian Mbappé, who arrived last summer in the Spanish capital. “Maybe Mbappé will never win the Ballon d’Or!” “The Real Madrid of last year, they won everything and this season, they’re going to lose everything. It’s the arrival of Kylian Mbappé that unbalanced the whole team! Mbappé–Vinicius, it’s obvious that it doesn’t work. You should never do things halfway. You don’t take Mbappé when you’re missing a midfielder and things have been a disaster since the best midfielder in the world Toni Kroos left. You have to replace him immediately. But if you take Kylian just to treat yourself, then you go all in on him and you let Vinicius go. Because Mbappé, he doesn’t have 50 seasons left. He’s going to turn 27 in December, what will he have left at the top? Three or four seasons and then it’s over! With the guys coming up behind, maybe he’ll never win the Ballon d’Or! So stop defending the indefensible.” Hanouna then continued his analysis by comparing the captain of the French national team to a “black cat.” “The guy, it’s crazy how unlucky he is! He leaves Paris, look at the season PSG is having! French champions, in the Cup final and on track for the Champions League semi-final. Like in the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar, we should never have lost to Argentina in the final. The guy scores a hat-trick and France still loses. It’s mad. He really brings bad luck!” The person concerned will surely appreciate that...

What emerges from these articles is not just a preview of a difficult second leg, but an editorial warning. Ancelotti is under pressure not only to repair what’s broken in time for Arsenal, but to make a case for his longer-term future at Real Madrid. It has already been reported that he is ‘on the ropes’ after the defeat in London.

As Calderón puts it, “Ancelotti must work against the clock to fix it all.”
