Real Madrid have never even been close to signing Martin Zubimendi, with his expected transfer to Arsenal now “taken for granted”, according to a report.

Spanish outlet Marca reports that Real Madrid are more likely to pursue Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister and Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali than Martin Zubimendi this summer, with the Real Sociedad midfielder seemingly never even close to a move to a Madrid.
Marca report that Zubimendi’s agreement with Arsenal is now “taken for granted everywhere”, and that’s pushed Real Madrid to turn to the Premier League for new signings.

This update follows a report from Cadena SER, who wrote that Arsenal made their intention to sign Zubimendi very clear during a board meeting with Real Madrid prior to the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
The Gunners reportedly told Real Madrid that they’ve practically finalised the signing of Zubimendi already.
James Olley also reported reported for ESPN last week that Arsenal were confident Zubimendi would be their first summer signing, with negotiations already at an advanced stage.
As well as Arteta being a keen admirer, sporting director Andrea Berta agrees that the player would help strengthen the team’s midfield. As a result, Zubimendi’s arrival is “widely expected” at the Emirates Stadium this summer.

It’s been a similar story ever since January, when initial reports broke that Arsenal had all but completed a deal.
Zubimendi is a key player for club and country at the moment, making 43 appearances for Real Sociedad this season and starting six of Spain’s last eight matches.
The 26-year-old was also a regular in the Spain squad as they won Euro 2024, making four appearances including 45 vital minutes to win the final following the injury to Rodri.
