French media outlet reports ‘doubt settles in Paris’ ahead of Arsenal clash

Arsenal’s Champions League semi-final opponents Paris Saint-Germain are facing growing internal concerns, according to a report by Ouest France on Sunday.

Following a poor run of domestic form and a damaging defeat against Nice, doubts have emerged about PSG’s state of readiness for Tuesday night’s clash at the Emirates.

Doubt settles in Paris ahead of the clash against Arsenal (31st matchday). Irresistible since the start of the year, PSG are going through a slump that is cause for concern ahead of the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Arsenal on Tuesday. PSG’s defeat against Nice at the Parc des Princes (3-1) on Friday illustrated the current flaws of Luis Enrique's men. A porous defence, a less dominant midfield, and a stuttering attack: the Parisian team is a far cry from the side that had impressed Europe in recent weeks. The second leg of the Champions League quarter-final in Birmingham, lost 3-2 on April 15, served as a warning, with the capital club's players falling apart in the second half and almost being taken to extra time after having led 2-0 at Villa Park. The following Ligue 1 matches only confirmed PSG’s loss of form, with only one win in their last four outings, achieved with difficulty at home against lowly-ranked Le Havre (2-1). Dembélé, the poor run The capital club, already assured of their 13th French title, are certainly handling domestic affairs and minds are naturally occupied by the Champions League. But the Parisians had made invincibility in Ligue 1 a target and their coach, usually a fan of squad rotation, had fielded his best eleven against Nice, aiming to fine-tune preparations ahead of facing the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium. Ousmane Dembélé symbolises the Parisian difficulties. Sparkling until recently, the former Rennes player is now on a run of five matches without scoring. Is it a temporary slump or the end of the grace period for a player long mocked for his inefficiency? As they prepare to face the iron defence of Arsenal, the best in England, it serves as a warning. Luis Enrique nevertheless wanted to focus only on the performance of his team, who largely dominated their opponents, saying he is absolutely not concerned ahead of the Arsenal clash. "I am not at all worried. What I saw, I would sign to see again on Tuesday in London and for the return leg. A team that creates 30 chances, I sign for it immediately. But I do not sign for the result, obviously," he declared. Beyond the attack, the problem also concerns the midfield, embodied by Vitinha, a key cog in the engine room. The Portuguese midfielder is much less dynamic than in recent months and the fluidity of Paris's game has suffered. His ability to resist Arsenal’s pressing, protect the defence, but also to play under heavy pressure will determine a large part of PSG’s fate on the road to a second Champions League final.

Ouest France describe how the 3-1 defeat at home to Nice exposed several issues in Luis Enrique‘s team, including defensive frailty, midfield inconsistency and a sudden lack of cutting edge in attack.

They write that PSG’s drop in standards began in the Champions League quarter-final, when they almost surrendered a two-goal aggregate lead at Aston Villa, losing 3-2 in the second leg.

Although PSG have already sealed the Ligue 1 title, the newspaper notes that their form has sharply declined, winning only one of their last four matches.

Ousmane Dembélé, previously a standout performer, has now gone five games without a goal. Whether it is a temporary slump or something more serious, it comes at the worst possible time with Arsenal’s defence, the best in England, awaiting.

There are also concerns about Vitinha, whose influence in midfield has waned. Ouest France suggests the Portuguese international’s ability to withstand Arsenal’s pressing and protect the PSG defence will be key to deciding the tie.

Despite the warning signs, Luis Enrique remains bullish. “I am not at all worried,” he insisted.

“What I saw, I would sign up to see again on Tuesday in London and for the return leg. A team that creates 30 chances, I would sign for immediately. But I would not sign for the result, obviously.”

It is worth nothing that the xG for PSG’s game against Nice was the reverse of the final scoreline, with Arsenal’s next opponents creating nine big chances, along with their 32 shots.

But Nice, whose xG was 0.96, managed to create only four big chances yet scored with three of them.

PSG have not kept a cleansheet in their last five fixtures and only one in their last nine.
