Manchester United take lead ahead of Arsenal for striker signing

Matheus Cunha is closing in on a move to Manchester United amid reports that Arsenal are prioritising different targets this summer.

Fabrizio Romano writes that Manchester United are leading the race to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves this summer, with negotiations ongoing and personal terms being discussed.

Romano adds that United are aware of interest from other clubs, as well as the fact Cunha has a £62.5m release clause. So they’re hoping to move fast to secure a deal, with initial contact between player and club going well.

Simon Jones reported for the Daily Mail earlier this week that United were inching closer to an agreement with Cunha, hoping to have terms in place by May.

Arsenal have been linked with Cunha throughout this season, with Alex Crook most recently reporting for talkSPORT that the club were still keeping tabs on the Wolves forward.

But even at that point, Crook claimed Arsenal had other preferred targets both at centre-forward and on the left-wing.

Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres is ahead of Cunha in terms of Arsenal’s number-nine targets, whilst Athletic Club’s Nico Williams leads Cunha on the wing.

Cunha was clearly never viewed as more than a backup option, which has allowed other clubs to make a stronger push for his signature.

The 25-year-old has scored 16 goals and assisted four for Wolves this season, helping his team to consecutive wins over United. It’s little wonder they’re after him, with their top-scoring striker on eight goals in all competitions.
