Real Madrid midfielder makes ‘almost impossible’ recovery in time to face Arsenal

Dani Ceballos’s unexpected recovery could offer Carlo Ancelotti a timely midfield boost ahead of Real Madrid’s uphill second leg against Arsenal.

The key day arrives for Dani Ceballos HE HAS A CHANCE TO BE INCLUDED IN TODAY’S SQUAD He is already training with the group and Ancelotti will decide today whether to include him or reserve him for Wednesday. Alaba is a doubt. REALMADRID.COM RAINY SESSION Spring rains continue to be a constant in Real Madrid’s recent training sessions. Good news for Real Madrid in yesterday’s training session. Dani Ceballos again completed the session with the group and today will undergo a definitive test to see whether he can travel to Vitoria for tomorrow’s league match against Alavés (4:15 PM). Depending on how he feels, Carlo Ancelotti and his staff will decide whether the Andalusian is included in the squad or is reserved for Wednesday’s clash against Arsenal. What is clear is that the former Betis player, who also played for Arsenal on loan, is in the final stage of a recovery process that on Thursday marked exactly five weeks. Initially, it was said that it would take about seven to eight weeks to recover from the serious injury — a semimembranosus muscle injury with tendon involvement in the left leg, sustained during the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals. Ceballos had already become a key figure in Real Madrid’s midfield by that stage of the season, acting as the glue between the defense and the usual front four in Carlo Ancelotti’s setups. His injury was a bucket of cold water for the team, as the importance of the player from Utrera, who once again started the season in a more secondary role, was growing exponentially in the weeks prior to his injury. Now, the midfielder is starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and everything indicates he could at least contribute in Wednesday’s Champions League clash at the Bernabéu, in which Los Blancos are seeking the impossible — to overturn the three-goal deficit brought by Arsenal to Madrid after their clear first-leg victory. As for the rest of the squad, Alaba, suffering from muscle overload, and Mendy and Lunin trained indoors. The Austrian, one of those singled out after the defeat in London, is doubtful for tomorrow. The expectation with Lunin is that he could be ready for the next league match, while with Mendy there is no timeline. REFEREE CHANGE The RFEF announced yesterday a change of referee for tomorrow’s match. Valencian referee Martínez Munuera is unavailable for personal reasons and will be replaced by Soto Grado from La Rioja.

Just days ago, Real Madrid had all but ruled Dani Ceballos out of Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final at the Santiago Bernabéu, with internal sources describing his return as “almost impossible.”

Now, not only has he returned to full training, he will undergo a final assessment today that could see him back in the squad.

The news reflects a sharp turnaround in Ceballos’s recovery from a significant injury sustained during the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final against Real Sociedad.

Suffering a hamstring problem in his left leg, he was initially expected to be out for seven-to-eight weeks. Thursday marked “exactly five weeks” since the injury, and yet Ceballos has already completed multiple training sessions with the group.

As reported by Marca, “Ceballos completed the session with the group and today passes a definitive test to see if he can travel to Vitoria for the league match against Alavés.”

“Depending on how he feels, Ancelotti and his staff will decide whether to include him in the squad or keep him for Arsenal.”

At the time of his injury, Marca report that Ceballos had quietly become central to Madrid’s midfield dynamics. His positioning between the back line and Ancelotti’s preferred attacking quartet gave the team its structural “glue”, a role that had grown more prominent in the weeks leading up to his absence.

His loss, they write, was a clear setback. Now, his return, should it be confirmed, would come when Madrid are without Eduardo Camavinga (suspended) while there are doubts over Federico Valverde’s availability after he finished the first leg in visible discomfort.

There is no guarantee Ceballos will start, but the mere fact that he is in contention is a significant development for Madrid, who must overturn a 3–0 deficit against an Arsenal side that is tactically disciplined and physically imposing.

Even a late cameo could matter against a club where Ceballos spent two underwhelming seasons. Ancelotti has leaned on the former Arsenal loanee in high-pressure moments before, trusting his ability to control the pace of the game. With Luka Modrić, now 39, stretched by the demands of the first leg, and Aurélien Tchouaméni only just returning from suspension, Ceballos could get the nod, although it seems more likely he will be used from the bench.

Whether Ceballos plays on Sunday against Alavés or is kept back for Wednesday, the fact that he’s now in contention is a boost for Madrid.
