Arsenal could profit as West Ham consider move for former Gunner

West Ham United are considering a summer move for Aaron Ramsdale, which would see Arsenal cashing in through a sell-on clause in the goalkeeper’s contract.

Gary Jacob reports for The Times that West Ham United are considering a bid for former Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale this summer, with the 26-year-old reportedly on the market for a fee of around £20m.

Jacob writes that Ramsdale is likely to leave Southampton this summer, following confirmation of their relegation, as he wants to stay in the Premier League ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Meanwhile, West Ham have Lukasz Fabianski, who is 40 next week and whose contract expires this summer, and Alphonse Areola, who has two years left on his deal. A goalkeeper looks like a priority signing for them.

Jacob adds that Ramsdale has also been linked with return to Bournemouth, and one other Premier League club has asked about signing him on loan.

This is all relevant to Arsenal, as the Gunners have a sell-on clause in Ramsdale’s contract with Southampton. The goalkeeper moved for £18m last summer, with up to £7m in add-on payments, though those bonuses are unlikely to be activated if he moves again so soon.

It’s already confirmed that Arsenal will miss out on at least £1m of the add-ons, due if Southampton avoided relegation.

The sell-on clause is now Arsenal’s best hope of some additional cash, so the club will want to see Ramsdale making another permanent move rather than a loan.
