Former Gunner set for Championship loan from Crystal Palace

Former Gunner Rob Holding is set to join Sheffield United on loan from Crystal Palace, after being frozen out of the Palace squad for almost the entirety of this season.

Mike McGrath reports for The Telegraph that Rob Holding is having a medical with Sheffield United ahead of a planned loan move lasting until the end of the season.

Holding has spent the season away from first-team action after being frozen out of Crystal Palace’s squad, with the BBC reporting in October that the player had a disagreement about a post-match running session back in August.

That match was Holding’s only involvement in a matchday squad for Palace this season, and he didn’t make it off the bench. He’s since played six times for their u21 side in the Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy, with clubs permitted to name a few over-age players each game.

The Athletic reported on Monday that Holding was attracting interest from Sheffield United for a deadline-day move, and it seems that’s now in the process of going ahead.

Sheffield United are currently playing in the Championship, and they signed another former Gunner Harry Clarke on loan last week.

The team are just two points off the top of the Championship table and currently sit in one of the automatic promotion places, and they clearly want to strengthen to ensure they return to the top division.

Holding joined Palace from Arsenal in 2023, but he’s only made one first-team appearance since then. The defender had played 162 times for the Gunners, 132 appearances more than he’s managed for any other club.

With a contract until 2026, Holding will presumably be on the market again this summer. He has a chance now to get himself in the shop window.
