Midfielder makes unexpected Arsenal January transfer decision

Sverre Nypan is set to remain with Rosenborg for the rest of the season, turning down potential moves to Arsenal, Girona, and Aston Villa despite looking set to move in this window.

Despite talk that 18-year-old Sverre Nypan would be on the move this month, with Arsenal strongly pursuing a transfer, the midfielder has reportedly now decided to stay where he is.

David Ornstein reports for The Athletic that Nypan is expected to stay with Rosenborg until the summer, after advanced transfer talks between his club and the Gunners.

Aston Villa and Girona were also in the mix, with Girona’s bid clearly being driven by Manchester City owners City Football Group. They invited Nypan to watch City in action against Chelsea in Erling Haaland’s box last weekend.

The news will be a blow to Arsenal, as they were hopeful of beating the competition to the signing after formal talks with the player in London over the last week.

The midfielder would have cost around £10m upfront, with significant add-ons likely as well.

Various reports suggested a decision was expected by Monday’s deadline, but not many predicted that said decision would be to remain where he was.

18-year-old Nypan scored eight goals and assisted 10 from midfield with Rosenborg in 2024, with their season coming to an end in December.

The youngster also made his debut for the Norway u21s in September, a quick jump up the ranks after debuting for their u19s earlier the same year. He’ll now start the new Norwegian club campaign with Rosenborg.

Arsenal could make another move in the summer, and they’ll likely feel they’ve set the groundwork for such an attempt. But it’s difficult to say what could happen, and other clubs with a long-term interest – like Manchester United – could now return to the race. It’s all up in the air now.
