Arsenal deal closer as club drops €30m release clause to facilitate sale

Arsenal’s pursuit of Joan Garcia may finally reach a conclusion this summer, with Espanyol sporting director Fran Garagarza hinting that the club could soften their stance on the goalkeeper’s €30 million release clause.

Last August, Arsenal lodged a €25 million (£20.8m) bid for Garcia, but Espanyol refused to negotiate below his full clause, forcing the Gunners to abandon their pursuit.

With the club unwilling to meet the financial demands of a buyout clause in Spain, which requires the entire fee to be paid upfront, Arsenal instead turned to Bournemouth’s Neto on loan as a short-term fix.

However, with Neto set to return to his parent club in July, Arsenal are expected to return for Garcia, and this time, Espanyol may be willing to compromise.

Speaking to Pericos Marca, Garagarza admitted that while Espanyol would not consider a low offer, the club would not necessarily demand the full release clause.

No-” ESPANYOL → Fran Garagarza referred to the future of the goalkeeper, on the agenda of several greats, and Puado, whose contract expires on June 30 Mundo Deportivo20 Feb 2025 PHOTO: PUNTÍ Garagarza, in a file photo The One from Mutriku attended to 'Brand Parakeets’ → Espanyolismo, calm after the last results (win over Real Madrid and equalized with Athletic Club) and, above all, for seeing his team out of the relegation places, is still pending on his two great references: Javi Puado, whose contract expires on June 30, and Joan Garcia, desired last summer by Arsenal and on the agenda of several European football greats. "Fluency” with Javi The future of both was referred to by the sporting director of RCD Espanyol, Fran Garagarza, on the microphones of 'Pericos Marca'. Of the first, ‘Pichichi’ blue and white with eight goals (his best record in the First Division), Mutriku said that “we are at the point of that day to day with him. Those contacts with their agents, in both directions, where there is fluency. That hasn't stopped,” Garagarza explained. However, its renovation is not an easy task. “There are some difficult situations. He has a good age (26 years old) and a certain position, but Espanyol is working to the maximum. And Javi too. The exercise that I have transferred is to go to the maximum and that the property understands that it is a benchmark for us, " said the head of the Espanyol sports management. Different is the case of Joan, goalkeeper with the most saves so far in the championship (89) and followed live last Sunday by the national coach, Luis de la Fuente. In August, the club referred to his termination clause (set at 25 million euros and raised until 30 to 15 days after each transfer window closes) when Mikel Arteta's Arsenal put 20 ‘kilos’ on the table to take him. "Clause or nothing? No. In the summer market, with Arsenal's call-up last week, there really has to be that. To want, yes; to be able, no.” in fixed and variable terms, Espanyol is not going to say no. He can't say no. If a club comes with eight million for Joan Garcia, that's a bad sale, 100%," said Garagarza, who has been out of stock for some time for the property. For up to three transfer windows, Espanyol has not invested, surviving on transfers and additions at zero cost. “We can't move in markets where, perhaps, Espanyol was moving eight years ago. We have to go to another profile of players and the academy to the maximum. And make a virtue of it. I focus on the fact that, with the resources I have, I have to perform, because that's what I'm going to be measured by,” the leader reflected, blunt when saying whether he regrets the departure of Martin Braithwaite. “It's not a question of my having regrets. I wish we had had the opportunity, but financially it was unfeasible. There were contract improvements with the promotion and before that it was impossible to arrive. To want, yes; to be able, no. We couldn't buy and sign for two seasons. That makes that contract count for you that season. That's why only Tejero came on property”" he concluded ●
Mundo Deportivo, 20 February 2025, “”Clause or nothing for Joan? No-”

“Clause or nothing? No. In the summer market, with Arsenal’s reaching out again last week, there really has to an agreement. But if you get an offer on June 14 that is not the clause but is close in fixed and variable terms, Espanyol is not going to say no. We can’t say no. If a club comes with €8m for Joan Garcia, that’s a bad sale, 100%,” Garagarza said, in quotes carried by Mundo Deportivo.

Espanyol’s financial struggles and a lack of investment over recent transfer windows make it increasingly likely they will need to cash in. The club have not been able to purchase a player for two seasons, relying on free transfers and loans, while their ongoing relegation battle further complicates their ability to hold on to key assets.

Earlier this month, Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider reported that Arsenal expect to finalise the signing of Garcia in the summer transfer window. According to the report, Arsenal remain confident of securing the deal after a failed move last summer, with James McNicholas of The Athletic further revealing that Arsenal held discussions with Garcia’s representatives when they travelled to Spain for their Champions League clash against Girona.

Garcia, who has made 24 appearances this season, remains one of La Liga’s busiest goalkeepers, leading the league in saves (89) while overperforming against expected goals conceded. However, Espanyol’s poor defensive record – just three clean sheets and 36 goals conceded – has left them hovering precariously above the drop zone, just one point clear of the bottom three.

A potential Espanyol relegation would likely accelerate negotiations, but even if they survive, Arsenal now have reason to believe that a structured deal below the €30m clause could finally get the transfer over the line.
