Ex-Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has been out of action for much of the season so far with a hamstring injury, playing just four times for Cardiff City and twice for Wales before this weekend.

The midfielder made his return to the starting lineup on Saturday, pulling on the captain’s armband for his team. And the opposition was an old foe in the form of Stoke City.

There’s no love lost between the Staffordshire club and Ramsey, after Ryan Shawcross broke the midfielder’s leg and the Stoke fans got really angry at him about it.

So tensions were running high as Ramsey returned to the pitch for the first time in five months at the Britannia Stadium, for Saturday’s FA Cup clash.

Initially, it looked like a comfortable afternoon for Ramsey’s Cardiff side, who raced into a 2-0 lead within 19 minutes. But the hosts turned the game around with three goals before the hour mark to lead 3-2.

Rubin Colwill grabbed an equaliser for Cardiff with 22 minutes to go, and the scores stayed level to send the tie to a penalty shootout. Former Gunners Calum Chambers and Chris Willock were among the shootout scorers as Cardiff triumphed 4-2.

After the game, Ramsey baited a large section of Stoke fans with some friendly waves and other gestures towards their end.

Cardiff are into the fifth round of the competition, with Ramsey completing 63 minutes of the match on his injury comeback. For the time being, the focus will return to the Championship, with Cardiff travelling to Portsmouth on Tuesday, February 11th.
