RB Leipzig refuse to sell key Arsenal target

RB Leipzig are refusing to let Benjamin Sesko leave in the January transfer window, and Arsenal appear willing to respect that stance despite their clear interest in the player.

On Wednesday, reports broke suggesting that an Arsenal deal for Benjamin Sesko could be on the cards in January, but those reports have since been shot down by multiple sources.

Ben Jacobs initially reported that Arsenal had made recent contact with RB Leipzig over Sesko, though he added that the player’s agent had made it clear a loan wouldn’t be possible in January.

Dharmesh Sheth of Sky Sports then reported that Arsenal were discussing the move internally.

But Leipzig head coach Marco Rose told Sky Sport Germany that Sesko is not for sale. Philipp Hinze asked if it’s still the case that the player is definitely not allowed to leave in January, and the manager responded: “Yes, that’s still the case!”

Simon Collings writes for The Standard that Sesko can leave Leipzig at the end of the season for £60m, but they don’t want to let him go in the middle of their top-four race.

Sami Mokbel reports for the Daily Mail that Arsenal retain an interest in Sesko, but a deal is increasingly unlikely this month. The Gunners are reportedly being respectful of Leipzig’s insistence that the striker isn’t for sale, and no club-to-club talks are ongoing.

Sesko has scored 14 goals and assisted three in 26 appearances for Leipzig this season, including netting in Wednesday’s win over Sporting CP. In the Bundesliga, he’s on a run of five goalscoring appearances.

The Slovenia international has also been performing well for his country, with five goals in his last six games.

Still just 21 years old, Sesko is clearly a big attacking talent, but Arsenal may have to wait to try to add him to their ranks.
