Kieran Tierney, the 27-year-old Arsenal defender and Scotland international, appears to be on the brink of a sentimental return to Celtic, having reportedly rejected interest from Premier League clubs Leicester City, Brentford, and West Ham.

Tierney closing in on Celtic return as Arteta eyes signing The Daily Telegraph - Saturday4 Jan 2025By Sam Dean Celtic are in talks with Kieran Tierney over a move that would take the Arsenal defender back to his boyhood club, either this month or at the end of the season. Tierney’s contract in north London expires in the summer, when he would be able to join another club as a free agent. As reported by Telegraph Sport last month, Celtic have made it clear that they want to tempt Tierney back to the club where he came through the youth ranks. Now that he is in the final six months of his Arsenal deal, Tierney, 27, is free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with teams outside of England. It is understood that negotiations have not yet started between the two clubs. It is unclear whether Celtic will be able to sign Tierney in the next few weeks or if they will have to wait until the summer to make their move. Tierney is not a significant part of Mikel Arteta’s plans, having made only one Arsenal appearance since recovering from a serious hamstring injury suffered on international duty with Scotland this summer. Meanwhile, it is understood that Arsenal are expecting offers this month for Poland defender Jakub Kiwior, who has been unable to establish himself as a regular starter at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal paid around £18 million to sign Kiwior from Italian side Spezia in January 2023 and the 24-year-old’s reputation in Italy remains strong. It is believed that Napoli are among the Serie A sides who want to sign Kiwior, while French reports have also linked Marseille with a move for him. A departure for Kiwior is far from certain, however, as Arsenal are already struggling with defensive depth amid injuries to Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu. They would also be expected to demand at least £20million for the Poland international, which could prove prohibitive for clubs on the Continent at this point of the campaign. Meanwhile, Arteta has said Arsenal remain open to making a signing this month, amid a growing clamour from supporters for a new forward to be added to the squad in the light of Bukayo Saka being out with a long-term injury. “If something stronger is in the market that we can afford and we believe is going to have a real impact in the team, we always have to be open for that possibility,” said Arteta, whose team play away at Brighton today. “Because we’d have the ability to improve the squad in the windows. But at the moment, the focus is on what we have.” Article Name:Tierney closing in on Celtic return as Arteta eyes signing Publication:The Daily Telegraph - Saturday Author:By Sam Dean Start Page:11 End Page:11

Tierney, who has struggled for playing time under Mikel Arteta in recent seasons, appears intent on reuniting with his boyhood club, where he made his professional debut.

Tierney’s time at Arsenal, marked by spells of brilliance and injuries, has seen him make just one appearance this season—against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup—despite recovering a few months ago from a hamstring injury sustained on international duty over the summer.

The Scot has been on the bench for Arsenal’s last seven Premier League matches, as Arteta has looked to alternative defensive options.

Interest in Tierney has been widespread, with clubs in Italy, Germany, and France also expressing an interest in the versatile left-back. However, Tierney has reportedly “shunned” all other suitors, with his heart set on a move back to Celtic Park.

Tierney ‘turns down offer to join the Foxes’ Leicester Mercury4 Jan 2025Writes LEICESTER City have reportedly missed out on a move for Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney during the January transfer window, TBR Football claim City were one of several clubs who enquired about the luckless Scot whose recent career has been blighted by injuries. The Foxes, along with Brentford and West Ham, are keen on the 27-year-old, who recently recovered from a hamstring injury to return to the Arsenal matchday squad. Clubs in Italy, Germany and France have also expressed an interest in Tierney. However, the report says there was “no interest” from Tierney’s side in joining Leicester, that he has “shunned” other suitors and has set his heart on a return to Celtic, where he started his career. Tierney has been an unused substitute in Arsenal’s last seven Premier League matches. He has only made one appearance so far this season, in the Carabao Cup victory over Crystal Palace in December. Tierney played 26 games on loan with Real Sociedad last term and also featured for Scotland in last summer’s European Championships. It is claimed Tierney has already held talks with Celtic and could either sign a pre-contract agreement, with his current Gunners deal set to end in the summer, or he could move this month. Tierney moved to Arsenal in 2019 and has made only 125 appearances for the north London club. Despite his injury record, Tierney’s quality and skillset would have appealed to City given the fact he can play either left-back or left-sided centre-back amid concerns over Leicester’s current defensive options. Wout Faes, Jannik Vestergaard, Caleb Okoli and Conor Coady have between them been unable to stop City posting the joint-worst defensive record in the Premier League. Talks are underway over a potential pre-contract agreement or a move in the January window, with Tierney’s Arsenal contract expiring this summer.

Arsenal will not take up their option to extend his deal by a further year, marking the end of the road for his time in London.

Tierney, purchased by Arsenal in 2019 for £25 million, has made 125 appearances for the north London club and is a firm favourite with the fans who will sad to see him go.

However, with defensive injuries forcing Arteta to rethink his options, Tierney remains a part of the matchday squad for Arsenal’s upcoming clash with Brighton, despite his likely departure.

According to the Scottish Daily Mail, Celtic’s defensive situation could accelerate Tierney’s return.

Current left-backs Greg Taylor and Alex Valle have uncertain futures, with Taylor’s contract expiring this summer and Valle midway through a loan from Barcelona. Celtic may move quickly to secure Tierney in January, especially after their recent 3-0 derby loss to Rangers, which has heightened calls for reinforcements.

While Arsenal would benefit from savings on the remainder of Tierney’s salary if he were to move in this window, the player himself is reportedly prepared to forgo up to £3 million to facilitate the transfer.

Tierney currently earns £5.72m-a-year with Arsenal (£110k-per-week).

Arteta, when asked about potential January departures, stated, “All the players that are here want to focus on performing and impacting the team, and if something happens there, then we will assess it.”

For Tierney, however, the path back to Glasgow seems increasingly clear, as both player and club appear eager to reignite a partnership that began in the Celtic youth ranks.
