Flamengo open talks to sign Arsenal midfielder in January

Flamengo have opened negotiations to sign Jorginho from Arsenal, but they don’t want to pay a transfer fee for the midfielder.

Globe Esporte report that Flamengo have opened talks for the signing of Jorginho from Arsenal, making enquiries over the finances and analysing them ahead of a potential three-year contract offer to the player.

Jorginho is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with Flamengo, given he’s in the final six months of his contract with Arsenal. But the Brazilian side want to do a deal now.

Yet Flamengo don’t want to pay a transfer fee, and they’re hoping to complete a deal for free in the January window.

Flamengo are reportedly relying on Jorginho’s good relationship with Arsenal to secure his free transfer six months early. The Gunners have already reportedly indicated that if a good offer comes in, they could release him, though doing so for free is another matter.

Head coach Filipe Luis has already spoken with the player to explain his role in the team.

There have also been claims in the last week that Jorginho has been offered to Palmeiras, and that the club have met with Jorginho’s agent. But Palmeiras haven’t made an offer, so Flamengo appear to be the favourites right now.

On a potential Arsenal stay, James Olley wrote for ESPN that the player is only likely to be offered a one-year extension ahead of this summer, the same as he signed last year. The 33-year-old would prefer a longer contract.

Jorginho has made 18 appearances for Arsenal this season, including 10 starts. He’s generally only made the lineup in the cups, or when a regular starter has needed a rest in the Premier League. He’s yet to make a start in the Champions League in 2024/25.
