Mikel Arteta fears that Gabriel Jesus has suffered a serious knee injury, following his early substitution during Sunday’s FA Cup match against Manchester United.
Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus was forced off after just 40 minutes against Manchester United on Sunday, requiring a stretcher to leave the field of play after going down holding his knee.
Speaking after the game, manager Mikel Arteta suggested there was serious concern about the injury.
“Big worry,” Arteta said. “That’s my feeling. He had to come off on a stretcher with a lot of pain. Touching his knee, it’s not looking good.
“I think it’s the other one (not the knee he injured before). The worrying factor is the feeling that he had. He had to come off and the pain that he was in.
“No (he hasn’t gone to hospital), he’s gone home.”
Simon Collings reports for The Standard that Jesus will undergo knee scans today as Arsenal seek to learn the extent of the injury, so we could get an update on the results from Arteta in his next press conference on Tuesday morning.
Sadly, the initial signs don’t look good. Physio Scout report on Twitter that footage of the injury shows a “collapse of the knee, pivoting and a tibia bone shift”, which “usually points towards an ACL injury”.
The same report suggested there’s still a chance Jesus has only suffered a meniscus injury, an isolated MCL injury, or even just a bone bruise in the best-case scenario. But those outcomes are viewed as more unlikely.
Given Jesus’ history with knee injuries, this is obviously a major concern. The forward has already had multiple extended absences for knee issues since joining Arsenal in 2022. All we can do now is wait for further updates.
