Premier League Arsenal target makes transfer decision

Matheus Cunha is expected to stay at Wolves this month, but he’ll be more open to offers in the summer, with Arsenal reportedly in the mix for his signature.

Konstantinos Lianos reports that Matheus Cunha is expected to stay at Wolves this month, and whilst a January move is not impossible, he prefers to remain where he is and sign a new contract.

Yet Lianos adds that Cunha will be more open to offers in the summer, with Manchester United and Arsenal reportedly keeping tabs on him.

David Ornstein reported for The Athletic this week that Cunha was edging towards signing a new contract with Wolves, lasting until 2029 with an option for an extra year.

Ornstein confirmed that there have been talks about a relegation release clause, but that the clause would be somewhat irrelevant as Cunha would be expected to leave if Wolves go down anyway.

If Wolves stay up, Ornstein reports that there will definitely not be a release clause, so their top-flight status may be key to Cunha’s long-term future.

The Telegraph’s John Percy previously confirmed that Arsenal hold an interest in Cunha, but he added that Wolves were never concerned about a January exit. They’ve been close to a contract extension for a while, and it’s now on the verge of completion.

“I hope he stays with us for a long time, but I understand that as a special player – he will have opportunities for sure in his career,” Wolves boss Vitor Pereira said recently.

“It is not only about his technique, but his personality. He is special because he can take the ball in a moment of pressure and make magic from nothing.

“Of course, I do not want him to be sold in January.”
