Arsenal target’s agent keen on January move amid new contract delay

Matheus Cunha’s situation remains uncertain, with Arsenal shortlisting the player and his agent reportedly keen to push a transfer.

Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha is seemingly close to a new contract with the club, but the situation continues to drag on for longer than many expected.

Fabrizio Romano reports that it’s still “one to be monitored” until the deal is done, with details still to clarify despite a verbal agreement between player and club two weeks ago.

Romano adds that Arsenal have had Cunha on their shortlist for months, and more clubs are also attentive to his situation.

Mirror journalist Alex Richards writes that Cunha’s agent is starting to make noise, and there’s a suggestion he’s keen to exploit a perceived gap in the market while it’s there.

Richards adds that Wolves aren’t interested in selling now, and they still expect the player’s new deal to be signed. But the club have a price, so a transfer isn’t impossible.

That price is reportedly “much more” than £60m, given Cunha’s importance to Wolves, the risk of relegation, their £44m investment in him and his subsequent improvement.

Wolves obviously will not want to do business with Arsenal this week, with the two clubs set to meet in a Premier League clash on Saturday. If a deal is to be done, it will be after that.

But with that kind of price tag, it seems unlikely. Arsenal would probably rather wait and hope Wolves get relegated, significantly reducing their valuation.
