Arsenal to receive £2m from sell-on clause this month

Arsenal will receive in the region of £2m for the transfer of Mika Biereth from Sturm Graz to AS Monaco thanks to a sell-on clause in the former Gunner’s contract.

James McNicholas reports for The Athletic that Mika Biereth’s sell-on clause with Sturm Graz will earn Arsenal around £2m, following his move to AS Monaco.

Monaco completed the signing for €13m (£11m) with an additional €2m (£1.7m) in add-ons, with Arsenal having sold Biereth to Sturm for £4m last summer.

So Arsenal will end up with around £6m in total, and Sturm will hold onto a net profit of around £5m. Both figures will presumably increase if and when the add-on targets are met.

Monaco were in the market for a striker this month due to the recent injury to another former Arsenal academy forward in Folarin Balogun. The expectation is that Balogun will miss around four months after shoulder surgery.

Biereth had a contract with Sturm until 2028, and he scored 14 goals in 25 appearances for them this season, including two in the Champions League. But after his brief permanent spell of just a few months, he’s already moved on.

As for how things are going for Biereth at Monaco so far, he had a mixed debut with the side in the Coupe de France last week.

Coming on as a half-time substitute, the striker set up Monaco’s equalising goal in the 1-1 draw with Stade de Reims, but he then saw his penalty saved in the subsequent shootout. Monaco were eliminated 3-1 on spot-kicks.

Biereth then played the full 90 of Monaco’s 2-1 Ligue 1 defeat to Montpellier, but he won’t be involved against Aston Villa on Tuesday night. He can only be added to Monaco’s Champions League squad after the League Phase is over.
