Arsenal monitoring Newcastle 25yo but there’s a catch

Arsenal are monitoring Alexander Isak’s situation at Newcastle United, though a potential move will depend on who succeeds Edu Gaspar at the club, according to a report.

Florian Plettenberg reports that Arsenal are monitoring the situation around Alexander Isak, with the striker on their shortlist among a number of other options.

Isak still has a contract with Newcastle United until 2028, though talks over a potential extension don’t seem to be going particularly well.

Plettenberg adds that much will depend on who succeeds Edu Gaspar as Arsenal’s sporting director, with the Brazilian set to depart the club.

Craig Hope recently reported for the Daily Mail that Newcastle United are not currently in talks with Isak over a new deal. There were preliminary discussions towards the end of last season, but the player and his camp were reluctant to commit, and conversations have since ceased.

Isak’s camp weren’t keen to extend his contract at Newcastle without Champions League football. If they fail to qualify this season, sources believe they’ll seek a move.

Hope added that Arsenal have declared an interest in Isak, but it would likely take a British record fee to convince his club to sell.

When questioned on his future over the international break, Isak said: “In my entire career, I have never spoken or commented on transfer rumours during the season.

“There have been many such years where it [a move to Arsenal] has been talked about, and I have said that it does not affect me.

“I am fully focused on my task at Newcastle, and we are working to have a great season, for which there are still great opportunities. I have no thoughts on anything else.”
