Arsenal made headlines this summer with the high-profile acquisition of Raheem Sterling on a season-long loan from Chelsea, securing a deal that was as advantageous for the Gunners as it was surprising.

According to reports from Miguel Delaney of the Independent, Chelsea initially demanded a loan fee for Sterling’s move to Arsenal, but the Gunners held their ground, making it clear that they were not prepared to pay one.

Arsenal’s resolve was evident; they were willing to walk away from the deal if Chelsea didn’t meet their terms, confident in their alternatives with Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson still in the squad.

The pressure was on Chelsea, who needed to offload players to manage their wage bill. In the end, they acquiesced to Arsenal’s demands, agreeing to a deal that sees Arsenal pay far less than 50% of Sterling’s £325,000-a-week wages.

Some reports even suggest that Arsenal might be paying as little as £100,000 a week for the England international’s services.

From Sterling’s perspective, the move was a dream come true. The winger was “delighted” to join Arsenal on loan, even open to a permanent transfer.

However, with the clock ticking down on the transfer window, the complexities of such a deal could not be resolved in time.

Sterling was even willing to take a pay cut to facilitate a permanent move, but with time running out, a season-long loan was the best solution.

Mikel Arteta has always been a keen admirer of Sterling, seeing him as more than just a talented player, but as a leader both on and off the pitch. Arteta, who worked closely with Sterling during their time together at Manchester City, is confident that the 29-year-old will thrive in Arsenal’s system.

Arteta expressed no concerns about Sterling’s physical condition, believing that he will fit seamlessly into Arsenal’s high-intensity style of play.

Reflecting on his reunion with Arteta, Sterling was effusive in his praise for the Arsenal manager: “He’s a top guy, a top character. I’ve been watching his journey because I spent some time with him at Manchester City, and to see him come in here and stamp his mark on this amazing football club, with this amazing history, it says a lot about him and the great job he is doing here.”

Sterling is eager to hit the ground running. Reflecting on his switch, he said, “I’m buzzing. It’s one where we left it late but it’s one I was hoping for. Looking at everything, I’m just like: ‘this is a perfect fit for me’, and I’m super happy that we got it over the line.”

Sterling’s enthusiasm for joining Arsenal was palpable, as he spoke about the hunger and desire within the club that mirrors his own ambition. “It’s a perfect fit for myself to be at a football club like this, where you can see that hunger, that desire, year on year, they are pushing and pushing and pushing. That’s exactly how I am as a person.”

As Arsenal prepare for a challenging run of games in September, the task now is to get Sterling up to speed and integrate him fully into the team. Given his familiarity with Arteta’s tactical approach, there is every reason to believe that Sterling will quickly become a key figure in Arsenal’s attack.

In the end, Sterling’s switch from west to north London appears to be the right move at this stage of his career, offering him a fresh challenge and the opportunity to contribute to a team with clear aspirations.

His successful spell at Manchester City, where he enjoyed his most productive goalscoring seasons, coupled with his determination to succeed under Arteta, makes this a move to watch closely in the coming months.
