Rodri has arrived in Spain ahead of tests on his right knee, with sources confirming an ACL injury and a long-term absence following his injury against Arsenal.
Manchester City’s Rodri went down midway through the first half against Arsenal on Sunday, after what looked like a fairly innocuous coming together.
Rodri was running alongside Thomas Partey ahead of a corner, and while jostling for position the City midfielder jarred his leg in the turf.
It wasn’t the first time Rodri had gone down, having feigned an injury in the first five seconds following a clash with Kai Havertz. But this time the problem appeared genuine, with the player writhing in pain.
The next day, Spanish outlet Marca confirmed that tests on the injury indicated a torn ACL in his right knee, though they added that the definitive diagnosis wouldn’t be given until after further testing in Madrid.
David Ornstein of The Athletic and James Benge of CBS Sports confirmed that Rodri is set to be ruled out for a significant period with a serious knee injury, adding that there are fears he may not return this season.
ESPN have now provided the update that Rodri has arrived in Spain for that additional testing, but the diagnosis already seems pretty clear.
Dr. Rajbal Brar points out that hands-on testing is extremely reliable with ACL injuries, so the follow-up MRI is usually just for confirmation.
Rodri has proven a key player for Manchester City in recent seasons, and they’ve often suffered without him.
Pep Guardiola’s side have got a couple of their big-six fixtures out of the way already, winning at Stamford Bridge and drawing at home to Arsenal. But it looks like they might have to get through the rest without one of their key men.
