Summer Arsenal transfer links with Anthony Gordon have been played down, with Newcastle United setting a high price for the winger.

Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon was linked with a transfer exit over the summer, but the north-east club effectively priced interested parties out of a move.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Liverpool were in talks to sign Gordon in June, but they ultimately decided he was too expensive.

Newcastle held firm with their asking price, and that move was ruled out.

As for Arsenal, Romano writes that he doesn’t have any concrete information on whether their reported interest in Gordon was genuine, but he does add that the Gunners never really planned to spend “crazy money” on a winger this summer.

Given Newcastle’s demands for Gordon, it seems Arsenal would have been priced out just like Liverpool, assuming they held an interest to begin with.

Gordon hasn’t taken any time away from the pitch in light of the transfer interest in him, making four appearances for Newcastle already this season before heading off with England in September.

The 23-year-old started both games over the break under interim England boss Lee Carsley.
