Arsenal summer signing Lucas Nygaard has had a less than ideal start to life at the club, with the goalkeeper confirming he’s broken his thumb.

One of three goalkeepers Arsenal have signed this summer, Lucas Nygaard took to Instagram on Wednesday to confirm that he’s suffered an injury.

“Not what I hoped for – a broken thumb,” Nygaard wrote. “But I’ll be back!

“Thanks to Andrea Cudazzo and the Arsenal medical team for taking care of me.”

Arsenal signed Nygaard towards the end of June, in a move that came somewhat out of the blue for supporters. But the deal had been a while in the making, with the goalkeeper already having spent time with the Gunners on trial earlier this year.

Before Arsenal, Nygaard was a goalkeeper for FC Nordsjaelland. When he left the club, he was available as a free agent, going on trials with the Gunners and PSG before signing his contract in north London as soon as he’d had his 18th birthday.

Nygaard is also a Denmark youth international, playing for the side at u16, u17, and u18 levels.

After joining Arsenal, Nygaard was straight into training, and he quickly made a debut for the u21s. He was then called up for the first-team tour of the United States, though Karl Hein was preferred for the actual matches.

Unfortunately, Nygaard will now require a spell on the sidelines to recover from his injury, with a broken thumb obviously more of a hindrance for a goalkeeper than a player in any other position.

The first team are well covered in the goalkeeping department, with David Raya and Aaron Ramsdale supported by another summer signing in Tommy Setford.

As for the u21s, Setford may get some minutes with the team, and Alexei Rojas and Brian Okonkwo are also available to fill in for Nygaard’s absence.
