Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has set a challenging tone for the upcoming Premier League season, insisting that his team is “still far” from reaching its full potential, despite a strong showing last year.

The Gunners came agonisingly close to clinching the title last season, leading the table for a significant portion before ultimately succumbing to the relentless Manchester City 115-charges machine.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s opening fixture against Wolves, Arteta stated, “I don’t see that we are close to that full potential. We are still far.”

However, the Spaniard also revealed a burning desire within his squad to avenge the disappointment of last season. Arteta disclosed that at a team dinner following the final matchday, his players made a vow to him – they were going to win the league for him next season.

This hunger for redemption has been evident in the team’s pre-season preparations. Arteta described his players as being “very hungry” and “determined” to go one step further this time around.

While acknowledging the high expectations surrounding his team, Arteta remains focused on the process of continuous improvement. He believes that there is still significant room for growth and development within the squad.

“The main focus for me and the coaching staff is to improve our players and focus on those fine margins in everything that we do to give them the best possibility to find the level that they probably hadn’t even dreamed about,” he said. “That’s what we have to do, and then we have to add something if we don’t have it in our team or in our academy. Then obviously we have to recruit.”

The manager’s comments will undoubtedly resonate with Arsenal fans, who have endured a long wait for a Premier League title. The team’s performance last season rekindled hopes of a return to the glory days, and Arteta’s words suggest that the players are equally determined to deliver.

As Arsenal embark on their new campaign, the pressure will be on to maintain the high standards they set last season. But with a hungry squad and a manager who believes in their potential, the Gunners will be hoping to make a serious challenge for the Premier League crown once again.
