Arsenal have sold Aaron Ramsdale to Southampton for an initial fee of £18m, but there are plenty of opportunities for the Gunners to earn more from the deal in the coming years.

David Ornstein reports that Arsenal could receive up to £7m in add-ons, with a £1m clause for Premier League survival, and £6m of further incentives.

But even that may not be all, with Kaya Kaynak of Football.London reporting that the Gunners also have a sell-on clause in Ramsdale’s Southampton contract.

That gives Arsenal some level of guarantee that they’ll receive more than just the initial £18m.

If Southampton stay up, that’s £1m already, with more likely to come through appearance clauses and so on. If they go down, Ramsdale would be likely to move on and at least activate the sell-on clause.

Arsenal signed Ramsdale for £24m, with add-ons potentially taking the fee as high as £30m. It’s unclear how many of those add-ons have been activated.

Considering Ramsdale completely dropped out of the Arsenal lineup over the last 12 months, the fact that the Gunners will recoup most – if not all – of the money they spent on him is not bad business.

In terms of alternatives to David Raya, Arsenal are trying to make a signing or two on deadline day, with Bournemouth’s Neto currently looking the most likely to join.
