Arsenal are on the brink of securing their fifth summer signing, with a deal for Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino reportedly in its final stages.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the Gunners are closing in on a €30 million deal for the 28-year-old Spaniard, with an agreement “really, really close.”

Merino, who recently won Euro 2024 with Spain, has been a long-term target for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who is said to be a driving force behind the move. The club’s board and scouting department are also in agreement that Merino is the perfect fit for the team.

The potential transfer has gained momentum in recent days, with reports of a €30 million verbal offer from Arsenal to Real Sociedad and an agreement in place on personal terms with Merino. The player is reportedly eager to return to the Premier League, having previously played for Newcastle United.

If everything goes according to plan, the final paperwork for the transfer could be exchanged by the end of the weekend, once the payment structure and add-ons are finalised. This timeline is crucial for Arsenal, as Merino’s holiday following Euro 2024 ends on Monday, August 5th. The Gunners hope to have the deal completed before then, allowing Merino to join his new teammates instead of returning to Real Sociedad.

This potential signing would mark a significant addition to Arsenal‘s midfield. Merino, a versatile and technically gifted player, is known for his passing ability, vision, and work rate. His experience in both La Liga and the Premier League, coupled with his recent success at Euro 2024, makes him an ideal candidate to strengthen Arsenal‘s midfield options.

Several reputable sources, including Relevo journalist Matteo Moretto and the Mirror‘s Ryan Taylor, have corroborated the information about Arsenal‘s advanced negotiations with Real Sociedad. While the deal is not yet officially confirmed, all signs point towards Mikel Merino becoming an Arsenal player in the coming days.
