Arsenal will reportedly increase their offer for Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino to approximately £30 million, in an attempt to secure the services of their key summer target.

The Gunners’ initial bid of £21.5 million was rejected, but the 28-year-old Spaniard is said to be keen on a move to the Emirates and has been left out of their squad this weekend as his manager confirms talks.

Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu, has been actively involved in negotiations in Spain, and Merino’s openness to the transfer has further fuelled the club’s pursuit. With only one year remaining on his contract with Real Sociedad, the midfielder’s desire for a new challenge looks like it will pave the way for a move to the Premier League.

Merino’s arrival would strengthen Arsenal’s midfield options, providing competition for the likes of Thomas Partey and Jorginho. The Spaniard’s versatility and experience, having previously played for Newcastle United and Borussia Dortmund, make him an attractive prospect for Mikel Arteta‘s side.

Furthermore, Real Sociedad’s recent success in retaining defensive midfielder Martin Zubimendi has reportedly eased their stance on Merino’s departure. Zubimendi’s decision to stay, despite interest from top clubs including Arsenal, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich, could seems to have opened the door for Merino’s move to North London.

On Friday, it was reported that Merino would be excluded from Real Sociedad’s squad this weekend for their game on Sunday as an Arsenal move neared. This was then confirmed on Saturday with manager Imanol Alguacil telling the media, “(I’ve left out players who) are in talks with other teams. If it were up to him (Merino), he would be on the pitch, but I’m leaving him out. I think it’s the best thing for everyone.

“During the week we worked thinking that he would be with the group and at the last minute I decided to leave him out.

“You know Merino, he was there to help. At the moment he is with us, at the moment he hasn’t left. I don’t know what will happen, although I know what he wants, but we don’t know because the market is what it is. Tomorrow he will help Real to win, but off the pitch.”
