As Fulham lined up against Manchester United to kick off the 24/25 Premier League season with Emile Smith Rowe, Alex Iwobi and Bernd Leno in their starting XI, I wondered where Willian had gone.

It seems he is now a free agent, pondering what to do with the short time left in his career.

Willian, once a celebrated winger for Chelsea, finds himself without a club after his contract with Fulham expired.

It’s safe to say at this point that his journey since signing for Arsenal has been marked by little but disappointment.

Willian’s Arsenal nightmare

In 2020, Willian made a high-profile move from Chelsea to Arsenal after seven successful years with the Blues. Despite a strong debut against Fulham, where he set up a few goals, his performance quickly deteriorated. He managed to score only one goal in 37 appearances during his time at Arsenal.

Reflecting on his decision to move across London, Willian expressed regret, stating, “I wish I’d never left Chelsea.” They had offered him a two-year deal but he wanted three, which Arsenal duly offered.

After one season, the situation with the Gunners became so untenable that both Willian and Arsenal agreed to terminate his contract early.

Death threats and uncertain future

Upon returning to Brazil to play for Corinthians after his disastrous stint at Arsenal, Willian faced a harrowing ordeal. Death threats directed at him and his family forced him to alter his daily routine and seek security measures.

His time at Corinthians was equally disappointing, with a record of one goal and three assists in 26 appearances and it was also cut short, although that was in large part due to the threats he was receiving and his desire to move.

Near-departure from Fulham & career resurgence

After signing for Fulham in 2022, Willian almost left the Cottagers last summer to join Nottingham Forest, even undergoing a medical with the club. However, at the last minute, he decided to stay with Fulham for another season when they improved their offer.

During this additional season, Willian seemed to resurrect his career somewhat, contributing to Fulham’s Premier League campaign with four goals and two assists. However, despite this relatively improved performance, Fulham ultimately decided not to renew his contract, leaving him a free agent once again.

“I would like to thank Fulham for a wonderful two years,” Willian posted on Instagram.

“It was special to return to the Premier League and be part of this historic club and the amazing fans.

“I have had incredible moments and this club will always be in my heart.”

Willian’s release from Fulham leaves his future uncertain. Although his father, Severino Vieira, indicated a potential return to Corinthians, no official negotiations have taken place.

At 36, Willian’s options may be limited, especially considering his recent struggles.

Since leaving Chelsea, where he scored 63 goals, with 57 assists, in 339 games, Willian has scored 11 goals, with 17 assists in 130 games, a drop that represents almost a 50% reduction in his goals/assists per game stats.
