Earlier this week, reports from Italy suggested that Lazio had reached an agreement with Arsenal for the transfer of Nuno Tavares, with the player joining on an initial loan with an option to buy.

Fabrizio Romano reported that the fee for the obligation will be set at around €7-8m (£5.9-6.7m), and that the Gunners will have a sell-on clause. Though he added that Lazio still need to agree personal terms with Tavares’ agent.

Lazio’s sporting director has since confirmed that they have an agreement with Arsenal.

“[Tavares] is a player who interests Lazio a lot,” Angelo Fabiani said on Wednesday.

“There have been talks between the two clubs for an agreement that was reached yesterday.

“Before completing the operation, however, many components must be agreed upon and an agreement must be found with the agents.

“I am more than confident, but for superstitious reasons I will not say that he is already a Lazio player.”

As for the value of the sell-on clause, Dharmesh Sheth reports for Sky Sports that the clause is believed to be 20% of a future sale.

Tavares joined Nottingham Forest on a loan deal with an option to buy last summer, but Forest opted against activating it. This time around, the obligation to buy will ensure Arsenal receive a fee at the end of the season.

Tavares made 12 appearances for Forest over the course of the 2023/24 season, with eight in the Premier League and four in the FA Cup.
