On Friday afternoon, Aston Villa confirmed that former Arsenal defender Calum Chambers has had his contract terminated, writing that the player is keen to play more first-team football.

Chambers tweeted in response to the statement, writing: “I would like to thank everyone at Aston Villa Football Club for the last few years! I wish the club all the best for the future!”

Jacob Tanswell of The Athletic reports that Chambers still had a year left on his contract with Villa, but the club agreed to terminate the deal last night.

Given Chambers’ professionalism and mutual respect between the two parties, the player has been allowed to move club freely.

Tanswell adds that Cardiff City are in talks for the 29-year-old defender, among other Championship sides.

Chambers only played eight games for Villa in 2023/24, though he clearly remained very popular with the squad. He remained on the bench for 33 games, and dropped out of the UEFA Conference League squad completely for the second half of the season.

A move was clearly for the best, and Chambers should now have a bit more flexibility to finalise one.
