Australian goalkeeper Mat Ryan, known to Arsenal fans for his brief loan stint in the 2020-21 season, has embarked on a new chapter in his career by joining AS Roma.

This move marks his 11th professional club since his debut with the Central Coast Mariners in 2010.

Ryan’s time at Arsenal was short-lived. Brought in to cover for the suspended Bernd Leno, he made three appearances for the Gunners. His debut came in a 1-0 away loss to Aston Villa, followed by a 1-1 home draw against Fulham, where he played a crucial role in Arsenal’s equaliser. He also secured his first clean sheet and win for the club in a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United.

Although his loan spell at Arsenal was brief, Ryan left a positive impression with his performances and professionalism. His move to Roma presents a new challenge as he competes with Serbian international Mile Svilar for the starting position.

Ryan’s journey has seen him play for numerous clubs across Europe, including Club Brugge, Valencia, Genk, Brighton & Hove Albion, Real Sociedad, Copenhagen, and AZ Alkmaar. He also established himself as Australia’s first-choice goalkeeper, representing his country in multiple World Cups and Asian Cups as he approaches 100 caps.

As he begins his tenure at AS Roma, the 32-year-old Ryan carries with him the experience and skills honed during his time at Arsenal and other top clubs. His arrival adds depth to Roma’s goalkeeping ranks and could potentially spark a competition for the number one spot, however he has been given the number 98 shirt which does not indicate first-choice status.
