Arsenal’s Chido Martin Obi will play in an u17 Euros semi-final on Sunday afternoon, but England’s Ethan Nwaneri was eliminated despite a strong individual display.

Arsenal had two youth players in the quarter-finals of the u17 European Championships, and both of them performed excellently for their countries in their last-eight ties earlier this week.

First, Chido Martin Obi scored a late equaliser for Denmark in their 1-1 draw before netting in the penalty shootout to send his team through to the semis.

Denmark would have met England at that stage, and Ethan Nwaneri gave the young lions the lead against Italy with a fantastic strike.

But Italy equalised soon afterwards, and despite Nwaneri scoring again in the penalty shootout, his team were ultimately eliminated.

Nwaneri scored three goals in his four games at the tournament.

The two Arsenal youngsters were absolutely pivotal for their teams in those quarter-final clashes.

Almost all of Denmark’s attacks went through Martin Obi, and he was unlucky not to score another having hit the post in the first half, before forcing some close-range saves in the second.

As for Nwaneri, he was a consistent threat and scored England’s only goal through a moment of individual brilliance. It’s just a shame his team couldn’t get over the line to set up a little Arsenal derby.

Instead, Martin Obi is now Arsenal’s final participant at the tournament, and he’ll look to help Denmark to beat Italy on Sunday, June 2nd at 18:30 BST before facing either Serbia or Portugal in Wednesday’s final.
